Well, I got offered the Chicago job.
I'm not sure what to do about it though.
It's not enough money. It's close, especially in terms of the relocation money and performance-based bonuses and such, but it's still less than what I'm getting now.
There are some really good points to the job. First of all, for each pay period I get one day of paid time off that accumulate, which means that I can get about 5 weeks of paid time off a year in addition to the 9 paid holidays they already have, meaning that I wouldn't have to work two months of the year. Those days also roll over from year to year, which can add up to one hell of a vacation. That would be great for when Ewan and any other future kids are home for summers and we could go on vacations and stuff.
They've also got a matching 401K and a pension plan that would be great for retirement. It's just weird to think that I have to be thinking of that now, but yeah I guess I need to start doing that. I've also got stock options and stuff like that.
This is a tremendous opportunity. This is a job where I'd never be bored. They're always doing something new and responsibilities will be constantly changing and there's the opportunity to move fast.
But then there's the moving away thing. That's far. That's hours away from our friends and family. Plus this will now be the third time in the past 5 years that I've moved us because of my career. I dragged Heather kicking and screaming from Ohio to Anderson when I got the teaching job, then I decide that I'm going back to Purdue, so we move to Lebtucky, which was more or less fine, but now I want us to move again to Illinois, and I'm sure Heather'll be at least kicking all the way there.
Dammit this sucks. If this job was here I wouldn't think twice. I'd be giving Donna my notice today. But it's not here. It's three hours away from here. Granted we're not that far from our Lafayette friends, but they're not gonna be there forever. Nate and Lesley will eventually move to Lafayette, which will make them an hour closer as well.
Really. This sucks.
